Book review - “Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts: A Healing Guide to the Secret Fears of New Mothers”

Updated: May 3, 2020

This book is an illustrated, self guide for new moms.  It is a must have! The author, Karen Kleinman, MSW, uses humor to explore the challenges of new motherhood.  It is real and honest. New moms often keep their thoughts, feelings and fears quiet & hold them in shame. Unfortunately, there is still such secrecy when it comes to talking about the challenges of being a new mom.  This book explores challenges and puts them all out in the open. Everyday concerns such as identifying needs, decision making, managing outside advice and body image are explored. Postpartum depression, anxiety, and obsessive compulsive disorder are also discussed in a reassuring way without being dismissive of their seriousness & their impact on mom, baby and family.

Each page features a down to earth illustration that moms can relate to.  The opposite page contains educational information and a simple related exercise.  If you are a new mom, or love & care about a new mom or provide professional care to a new mom- you should own this much needed book, which is fairly new- published in March of 2019.

And if you are a new mom who is having a rough go, know that you are not alone, you are not to blame and treatment is available.  Therapists, including me, have special training in postpartum mental health & we are happy to help.
